Serving Children and Families Since 1939
At Hopkins House we know the key to long-term
educational success is making sure kids get the best start
possible. We also know that a strong family foundation
is essential. To ensure this we've designed an
innovative curriculum, assembled a team of amazing teachers
and created a nurturing environment where it all comes
together. And at the core of our philosophy, we
believe every child - regardless of their family's income
level - deserves an equal chance to this education.
Through high-quality preschools, financial
literacy, homeownership, parent involvement, reading and
literacy, and summer enrichment programs, Hopkins House
offers to children and families the skills they will need
for a life time of learning.

Hopkins House was founded in
1939 by a group of concerned citizens brought together by
the sudden loss of federal funding for a favorite Alexandria
nursery. The group, composed mostly of public school teachers,
met on August 7, 1939 and adopted a constitution and bylaws
that formed Hopkins House. They named the institution in
memory of Dr. J. Milton Hopkins (1872-1927), a physician who tended to
the needy in Alexandria for more than 30 years (Pictured to the left).
